sky LEGENDS: ART DIRECTION

  • IDENTITY: VINTAGE AVIATION IN AN ALTERNATE TIMELINE // EMOTION: Adventurous, modern nostalgia

worked with Disney to create a new world and characters. When I joined this project the team had a prototype, a bunch of different directions for theme and visuals.

GOAL: When I joined this project the team had a prototype, a bunch of different directions for theme and visuals. It was my job to sort out all the different approaches and options into one coherent vision.
SOLUTION: I visited a lot of different Aviation museums, and discovered that vintage aviation is cool. There is an old time heroic feel to it. I focused on the elements that I found myself responding to to build both a world a art style.
OUTCOME: Across the characters, Color choices, planes and even the music this game began to feel like you'd discovered something new from another era. There were still enough surprises along the way to make it feel like a world worth your time to explore.

Working on Sky Legends was a ton of fun. I was given a lot of room to invent the characters and the setting in addition to the art direction. I Started at the studio before any other artists had joined and it allowed me the chance to build up a clean foundation for the artists to build on once they started. That foundation included, an art bible, character artwork, location sketches and a clear idea of who would be working on what.
